Counselor. Teacher. Mom.
I am the parent of an Attea Middle School seventh grader and a Glenbrook South High School junior. I am also a former high school English teacher as well as a current high school counselor at CICS Northtown Academy. I was surprised to learn that none of our Glenbrook D225 board members are high school educators. Since the board is responsible for approving school policy, it's critical that we have someone on the board who understands the ins and outs of a school system and is already a proven advocate for students, families, and teachers.
I am committed to...
Improving Communication & Community Participation
At times, D225's communication misses the mark and feels reactive rather than collaborative and proactive. We also have low turnout at board meetings and low parent/guardian participation in school surveys. As a board member, I will work to restore community trust by advocating for clear communication and new strategies that invite families to be part of the conversation and the community.
Fostering Safe, Inclusive Schools Where ALL Students Belong
D225's handling of last year's Glenbrook South High School Yearbook caused harm within our community. It's critical that all stakeholders familiarize themselves with the diverse experiences of the students and staff in D225. In addition, we've seen a drop in student participation in dances, spirit week activities, and more. Both of these issues can lead to students' decreased sense of belonging to the Glenbrooks. As a board member, I will advocate for additional professional development and upstander/bystander training as well as programming to encourage our students to (re)engage with the school community.
Funding Programs Equitably to Benefit All Students
With a finite budget, it's important that we use our resources carefully to benefit the most students. One big change we could make to improve our college and career outcomes is hiring additional college and career counselors. We have an incredible Student Services team at the Glenbrooks, but I am surprised that we only have 3 college and career counselors in the district to serve 5,000 students; the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) recommend a ratio of 250:1. Another change we could make is offering an ACT or SAT preparation class as an elective or summer school option to increase the number of students who can do test preparation at school. As a school board member, I will review our school budget to ensure that our resources are being used to benefit all students and prepare them for their future.
Providing Quality Education in the 4 A's for All Students
The Glenbrooks are known for their innovative academic programming and diverse elective offerings as well as their wealth of opportunities in the arts, athletics, and activities. As a school board member, I will review all curriculum and programmatic proposals to ensure that the Glenbrooks continue to provide high quality education for all students. I also am committed to making sure that all students - especially our diverse learners and English Language learners - are able to fully access and engage with this curriculum.
